His Holiness, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was born in May 1956, in Southern India. His family has fostered spirituality and a universal outlook for generations. At the tender age of four, He could recite the Bhagavad Gita. Since early childhood,He would be found rapt in meditation for hours. At the age of eight, He commenced studies of Ancient Indian Vedic Literature under the guidance of several acclaimed Vedic Masters and by seventeen, He completed His education in Modern Science.
In 1982, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar emerged from a period of silence and deep meditation and the "Sudarshan Kriya" breathing technique spontaneously came to His awareness. He travelled from country to country creating a tidal wave of knowledge and devotion, spreading joy and wisdom through the "Art Of Living" workshops, showing people the way to become stress free and how to enrich life with Divine qualities. Today this has spread to 140 countries. Nova University and MIT in Boston, among others, have introduced the Art Of Living programme as part of the curriculum. In India IIM's, IIT's and several other universities and colleges have conducted the Art Of Living programme in their campus. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has addressed many International Gatherings, including the United Nations, The World Economic Forum at Davos, The European Parliament etc. He is regularly featured in University symposiums and televisions around the world.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is the inspiration behind the International Non Profit, Charitable and Educational organisations around the world: Vyakti Vikas Kendra, India, Ved Vignan Maha Vidya Peeth, The Art Of Living Foundation, USA, Die Gesellschaft Fur Inneres Wachustum e.V. Germany and the International Association For Human Values, Switzerland. The main focus of these organisations is on service through programmes offered in areas of Holistic Health, Education, Social and Community Development, Crime Prevention and Social Rehabilitation.
